Dealing with Pomeranian Separation Anxiety

Pomeranians are incredibly loyal dogs and become very attached to their owner.  This is a great trait to have, however it may lead to Pomeranian separation anxiety.  Dealing with Pomeranian separation anxiety isn’t easy, but it can be done!

Pomeranian Separation AnxietyDoes your Pomeranian bark or whine when you leave home?  If they stop not long after you leave then this okay.  However, if the barking and whining continues for a long period of time then they may have separation anxiety.  Separation anxiety is not a nice thing for your Pomeranian to have, as it will make them feel anxious and upset.  The following information and techniques will help you control Pomeranian separation anxiety.

Why do Pomeranians get separation anxiety?

Before dealing with Pomeranian separation anxiety, you firstly need to find out the reasons behind why it is happening.

  • Pomeranians are incredibly loyal dogs and will become extremely attached to their owner.  Because of this they may get upset if their owner leaves the house thus causing Pomeranian separation anxiety.
  • If you give your Pomeranian lots of cuddles and praise before and after you arrive home then this may encourage separation anxiety.

How to control Pomeranian separation anxiety

The next step in dealing with Pomeranian separation anxiety is to control it.  The below tips are some great ways you can to do this:

  • Your Pomeranian may associate your daily routine as a trigger you are about to leave home.  For example your alarm going off or hopping in the shower could be a trigger you are about to leave. The best thing to do is to mix it up a bit to stop these triggers.  Try getting up at different times and regularly change the times you have a shower or eat breakfast.  These small changes will help lessen the chance of your Pomeranian getting separation anxiety.
  • When dealing with Pomeranian separation anxiety it’s important to not give them lots of cuddles or affection before you leave or after you arrive home.  If you do this you are just praising and encouraging your Pomeranians separation anxiety.  You need to stop the relationship between cuddles and leaving / arriving.  You can do this by not giving your Pomeranian attention for the first ten minutes before you leave, or for the first ten minutes after you arrive home.  This will be extremely hard, especially if your Pomeranian is excited to see you!  But remember, it is for your Pomeranians own benefit.
  • Another excellent technique when dealing with Pomeranian separation anxiety is by increasing the amount of time you are away little by little.  For the first time, leave only for a minute then come back.  Slowly but surely increase the amount of time you are away.  By doing this you will be showing your Pomeranian that you do come back and they have nothing to worry about.  They will become less anxious and have less chance of getting Pomeranian separation anxiety.  Over time you will be able to leave your Pomeranian at home for a much longer period of time.

Separation anxiety is not a nice thing for your Pomeranian to have.   So it’s really important you control it as soon as possible. Dealing with Pomeranian separation anxiety won’t be easy to start with but it will be worth it – you will have a much happier and content Pomeranian after.
